Project Description

Project name: Copernicus Marine – Production – Provision of ocean monitoring and forecasting products (COP-MFC-5000)

Funded by: Contract with Now Systems, within the Copernicus programme, funded by the European Commission. This project is part of the “Copernicus Marine Service (2021-2027)”, whose implementation has been entrusted to Mercator Ocean International.

Project overview: Provide daily estimated ocean models and forecasts of a range of physical parameters for the European Atlantic region.

Provision of integrated ocean analysis and forecasting services within the Copernicus Marine Service. These services, known as Monitoring and Forecasting Centres (MFCs), will provide real-time and delayed-time modelled products on physical, biogeochemical and sea ice conditions for the global ocean and European regional seas. As for today, seven MFCs are operational, including the one covering the Northwest platform (NWS).

CESGA provide shigh-performance computing (HPC) resources, computing infrastructure and support, as specified in the technical proposal, for the development of activities corresponding to the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service, within the framework of the provision of ocean analysis and forecasting products for the Iberia, Bay of Biscay and Ireland (IBI) platforms.

Our support includes:

– Supercomputing resources, with the Finisterrae III as the IBI-MFC production machine (used for the production of NRT and MY). Pre-operational and development environments will also be provided for the IBI-MFC consortium.

– Contributing to ensuring the dissemination of IBI-MFC products through the required user interface, with the promised timeliness (guaranteeing the necessary bandwidth) and security (complying with the service’s cybersecurity requirements).

– Support the migration and porting of applications to the operational environment for any new developments related to the improvement of the operational service (in accordance with the commitments for the evolution of the IBI-MFC systems and following the proposed evolution plans).

– Contribution to the optimisation of operating systems and physico-biogeochemical wave models (e.g., WAM, NEMO-PISCES); study and proposal of uses of new architectures and accelerators in IBI applications. In particular, related to the use of heterogeneous computing (combination of CPUs and GPUs for the pre-processing and post-processing tasks of the IBI-MFC operational I/O).

– Support for the operational monitoring of the IBI-MFC, contributing to the updating and improvement of the IBI-Trol monitoring tool.
