This project aims to upgrade the CESGA node, as part of the 2021-2024 Strategic Plan for the distributed ICT RES, which will significantly increase the RES’s capabilities and further enhance the diversity of related architectures and services.
Funding will be provided through contract ICTS-MRR-2024-10-CESGA (RES), covered by Royal Decree 714/2024, of July 23, which regulates the direct granting of various subsidies to strengthen the capabilities, infrastructure, and equipment of micro and nanofabrication cleanrooms and supercomputing centers within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, funded by the EU’s Next Generation program. This Decree provides a subsidy for the improvement of computing facilities, data storage systems, and the necessary developments associated with quantum technology. This project is also part of the PERTE Chip program. The activities to be carried out are integrated into R&D&I on cutting-edge microprocessors and alternative architectures.
The activities to be carried out within the project are described below:
- Finisterrae IV: This activity involves the deployment of a new supercomputer with an estimated peak power of 20 PFLOPS. The project involves the acquisition of what will be CESGA’s main HPC infrastructure in the coming years, complementing and replacing Finisterrae III.
- Data Center: The objective of this project is to build the essential data center to house all CESGA infrastructure, especially those included in this plan. The project will include all the necessary elements for the installation of electricity, cooling, fire detection and extinguishing, security equipment, power lines, etc., for the new supercomputing and storage systems.
- Quantum Computer Phase II: This involves the installation of a computing infrastructure based on quantum hardware technology.
- Permanent Data Storage System: Second expansion of storage capacity: Acquisition of a high-capacity storage system that will include an estimated 100 PB of tape technology and 25 PB of online storage based on disk or flash technology. It will provide long-term archiving and backup capabilities.
The positions required in this call will perform the various tasks necessary for the acquisition, deployment, and commissioning of the infrastructure and works contained in the activities indicated in the previous paragraph.
