Project Description

T-Maestro

Period: 2007-09-01 – 2010-08-31 (36 months).

Funded by: Xunta de Galicia

T-Maestro project is funded by the General Directorate of I + D of the Xunta de Galicia, involving CESGA (coordinator) and the Interactive Digital Television Laboratory at the University of Vigo.

T-Maestro is based on the development of digital TV technologies (both stationary and mobile receivers) to deliver interactive telematic applications along with classic visual signals, and its emerging role in two novel types of electronic learning (e-learning) , called T-learning (learning through TV) and M-learning (learning through mobile devices) that promise to become effective support of new forms of learning.

When designing applications for these media, must be taken into account the peculiarities both from a technical point of view (the receivers provide the user with more limited interaction possibilities than a personal computer and content delivery is done through broadcast channels rather than point to point) and social (because it means universal access media will have heterogeneous users). These characteristics discourage to build these applications as a simple translation of web based applications. In this context, the objective of this project is the design, development and validation of an environment for the creation of training proposals, valid in the field of T-learning as in the M-learningwhich takes into account the peculiarities of this means above, and to overcome the main obstacles identified in the e-learning proposals.

To achieve this goal, we propose the development of an architecture of M-learning and T-learning delivery service  that involves four key ingredients:

1. The integration of entertainment (TV programs) and educational content (according to SCORM standard). This integration will occur in two ways. On one hand, will use the TV to attract the user to learning (what is known as “entercation” entertainment + education). On the other hand will be complemented by the educational content with TV shows (ie “edutainment” education + entertainment) that will make the learning experience more motivating and according the environment that provides the TV.

2. The personalization of content. In the context of interactive digital TV (broadcast at home or to mobile devices), the large number of recreational and educational contents that is possible to access may disorient or discourage the user that can not find the content seeked easily. Avoiding these situations requires the use of recommended strategies of educational content that fits perfectly with the training concerns of the students as well as their educational background.

3. The adaptation of content. In a scenario as described is more feasible to design adaptive educational content into the target platform for the particular user profile.

4. Validation of the proposed solution. As with all implementation proposals of technology to teaching-learning process is necessary to analyze and evaluate the proposal from an end user perspective, following educational, usability and accessibility criteria, as well as the viability and performance of the technological solution . This validation will be the main activity of the area of e-Learning CESGA.

In order to validate the proposed solution, we designed a prototype tool that allows the creation of educational content appropriate for this platform as well as educational, usability and accessibility requirements established. For this evaluation will be established the quantitative and qualitative tools that allow in-depth analysis of all these aspects.
